Simone Rocha Spring & Summer 2019

Oscillating between well made shapes in the clothes and having as much shape as a shower curtain draped on a girl, the collection of Simone Rocha for Spring and Summer of 2019 has quite the extremes and none in between them.

The biggest problem addressed first, we couldn’t understand who the woman or women wearing these clothes were, where she/they could possibly be going and what their objective of wearing these clothes were. While we couldn’t come to a conclusive answer ourselves, we sincerely hope the designers did; though given the collection, it’s hard to say.

The good ones in the collection – the clothes that look like they were designed for 2018 – are quite wearable, commercial and appropriate for a lot of formal events and for those who like to be more conservative with their formal-wear. They are even good enough to be seen on page 3 socialites and celebrities, no doubt.

On the flip side, however, there are also designs that look like recycled throwaways from the 1920s, somewhere in the world and even our grandmothers would probably frown at their make and shape – if not for the cloth or material itself.

While we have no problem with conservative collections at all (and would personally love to see some good, show less skin fashion along with dresses that do expose some skin), it is important not to make such pieces not look old, matronly or costume like; much worse, all three.

To us, there were some pieces in this showcase that we would love to own and wear – and some that we sincerely hope we never have to see again. Until next season, when we hope we will see a better collection from Simone Rocha, we are going to go and swing between loving and hating these pieces.

Overall Impression – 6/10

Favourite Pieces – the rose petals on black, the red with white florals, the classic white with a veiled hat.

Lunyee Spring & Summer 2019

Given the number of designers who worked on this collection and the level of cohesion and harmony they were able to achieve, Lunyee was the collection that surprised us the most this season. Where we expected a steady flow like any other collection, this showcase with both men and women’s wear was indeed a much welcome sort of ‘calm’ amidst the storm of this year’s London Fashion week.

Despite the many cooks who could have potentially spoilt this broth, there was finesse in the work and execution of the clothes and a clash-free clarity in the ideas presented. The range, diversity and versatility of having multiple designers work on the project were not only beneficial but also greatly appreciated by the spectators.

There were no trashy pieces in the collection from what we can tell – just pieces we prefer over most others. However, there were some major “Oh No!” moments too, such as with the translucent rain-coat type top for men, the shiny fringe detailing on a jacket, etc.

Despite all this, Lunyee managed to give us a collection we can look forward to own and rock, next season. The range, quality and look of the materials, the functionality and the ease of the clothing presented make the range desirable and hence, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of people in Lunyee’s clothes, this spring summer.

Overall Impression – 8.5/10

Favourite Pieces – Blue and black dress, icy blue dress, pale pink piece, new version of the LBD, one shoulder white top, beige cape top and so many more!

Jamie We: Huang Spring & Summer 2019

Encompassing bright blues, crisp whites, some pastels and even some pinks, the Jamie We: Huang Collection this year can easily be called “Burberry goes on Vacay” – in the loveliest sense possible. From the unique accessories to the impeccable styling, the show left spectators wanting to see more – even after the last model walked back.

Some of the pieces that were highly appreciated by the spectators at large, at the showcase include the electric blue dress paired with an oversized white shirt, the white blouse paired with a grey flannel like skirt, the pantsuit seperates, the denim and grey patchwork themed dress and numerous others. However, parallelly, there were also some pieces that were heavily critiqued, such as the use of yellow thigh high boots and thigh high boots for a spring summer collection in general.

Taken as a whole, the collection had some very strong designs which were infused into commercial looks. Individual pieces were simple enough to own and yet, special enough to be designer. The fact that the styling and accessories (which were quite interesting themselves!) worked in the brands favour, shows that there is no doubt taste where the designs come from. Though not everyone will appreciate the intentionally rugged look use in the collection, there is nothing that can be counted ‘hideous’ or ‘unforgiveable’ – as the big names in the fashion industry would term them.

The collection, in all, is very cohesive, spring summer appropriate and presents some fresh designs. Whether people will be able to overlook their ‘faux-pas’ and actually wholeheartedly sport their pieces or not.. now that is a question only time can answer. All said and done, are their pieces that we would love to own from the collection? Absolutely. Can we envision any of these at the Cannes or Oscars? Maybe not from this season.

Overall Impression – 9/10

Favourite Pieces – All the striped pieces/looks, the sheer/peek-a-boo pieces.

Jenny Packham Spring & Summer 2019

After a seventeen season hiatus from fashion week, when Jenny Packham showcased this season, the collection was not special for this reason alone. The company, which celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year, set up this special showcase at their flagship store in London.

The collection, inspired by Jean Harlow (yes – the Hollywood icon from the 1930s who is also known for making the ‘Platinum Blond’ an iconic hair trend), is not literal in its inspiration but the elements used are evident enough. There are fun, flirty dresses as well as chic, sophisticated ones in the range and without fail, there seems to be a vintage Hollywood inspired dresses for every occasion.

In essence, the collection is iconic in its own right and the outfits are not only easy to carry off, but also easy to style. The dresses, the styling and the accessories are feminine, delicate and undoubtedly beautiful – without seeming like something a damsel in distress would wear. A lot of the people who viewed the collection also commended how easy the pieces are to style and yet, have enough character to be left on their own too – a fact we wholeheartedly second.

So this season, if you are looking to be trendy in a classic sort of way, you will need to look no further from Jenny Packham. In this comeback – and what a brilliant comeback it Is, indeed! – we are so happy await the next collection of the brand, which will also hopefully be at a fashion week next season.

Overall Impression – 8/10

Favourite Pieces – White petal detailed gown; Silver Party Gown; Smoke themed gown.

David Koma Spring & Summer 2019

In a cohesive collection that can easily be called “dedicated to ruffles” David Koma, this season gives us some major goals in terms of summer fashion and some not so fancy pieces. The collection, besides having a harmony in the presented clothes, also serve well as individual looks that can be recreated by queens and commoners alike.

Easy, light make up and carefully chosen sparse accessories help us focus on the clothes and this strategy works in the favour of the brand. Although there are some eyebrow raising choices of colour amidst an otherwise ‘clearly for summer’ collection, the finesse in the design and the detailing gives us enough reason to look past the scheme.

The choice of material has been safe in this collection – there aren’t any daring materials used, which is sensible considering the almost OTT (over the top) number of ruffles seen in the collection. However, what is presented is fancy and there is no doubt in the taste and design aesthetic the brand represents.

With some slightly more flashy and daring pieces too, David Koma SS19 has not let us down. Is this the best collection we have seen? No where close; but is this a collection we can wear ourselves and have in our wardrobe over the next three summers? Yes.. Absolutely.

Our conclusion: If you are looking for the next nice set of dresses to hang in your bedroom that you can rely on to make you look sophisticated at tea parties and weddings alike, this collection is for you. However, if you give a lot of weightage to the “wow” element when it comes to your clothes, maybe you will need to wait a little longer if you are a patron of David Koma.

Overall Impression – 6.5/10

Favourite Pieces – the little white dresses, the sequined pieces and the black peplum crop top

Ashley Williams Spring & Summer 2019

If you’re looking for designs that make you squirm in your seat and make people uneasy, this season’s Ashley Williams Collection is just for you. With a range of colours (really.. range!) and prints in materials that border on “questionably cheap”, the beauty of a lot of the pieces is lost in the material used.

From newspaper prints to very bold animal prints, the collection uses myriad designs and styles for the presented looks – most of which either border on outdated or are just.. tacky. That said, there are some wonderful; salvageable pieces too – such as crop tops, netted skirts and even some swimwear with words. All of these can be recycled if styled will with things that actually accentuate them instead of making them look messy.

Coming to the styling, the accessories and the hair on the models was absolutely shocking – and not in a good way. Dazzling diamonds that remind us of all our fashion blunders back in 2005, not to mention hair styled enough to stick up in perfectly straight ponytails pointing to the roof – yes, an absolute recipe for disaster. Worse, words such as crazy in bedazzled hair accessories is the last thing we want to be seen wearing – with our lounge wear this summer.

All said and done, the one thing that cannot be taken away from the brand is how well it works with silhouettes and how good its construction is. While most of us would never dream of wearing over eighty percent of this collection, there is still a small part of our more adventurous souls who will rock those “Retired and loving it” clothes.

Overall Impression – 5.5/10

Favourite Pieces – Newspaper print dress, summer dresses, grey bell sleeved top

Gareth Pugh Spring & Summer 2019

If there is one collection that screams “Deadpool meets Rock Chick”, it is this!

This collection was by far our favourite one to watch – not for the pieces it showcased but for the entertainment value and the sheer fact that every piece that walked out, caught our attention and go “Oh!”

While these pieces may not be things you can wear on an everyday basis, these are definitely high fashion, new and highly editorial. For those looking for a rock chic, warrior princess look – there couldn’t be a better designer and/or collection to look at.

Though some might argue that the pieces were not the most sober, for people who celebrate eccentricity, these are a true treat. Most important element throughout the show has been the fluidity in the collection and how cohesive it has turned out to be.

It is going to take a while for us to get over this brilliant (albeit slightly impractical) collection – but needless to say, we are most certainly looking forward to their next showcase!

Overall Impression – 7/10

Favourite Pieces – Hot Pink full sleeve mini, Black bleached design dress.

Julien Macdonald Spring & Summer 2019

One of our favourite showcases at the London Fashion Week, Julien Macdonald not only had quite a few famous faces walking for them, but also did complete justice to the anticipation with which their fans awaited this collection.

The clothes showcased for both men and women in the line are sure to set the trend for all the parties and the “happening” events this summer. With unparalleled construction and luxury dripping from every stitch, the looks presented were not only aspirational but also very functional.

The collection has also managed to show some very sparkly and traditionally non-masculine pieces in a very structured and masculine way. To balance that, there are also some phenomenal pieces which have no glitter but could give all the shiny pieces a run for their money in the glamour quotient.

The best part about this collection isn’t how useful or how diverse it is – but rather, at how well the fabrics used in making the pieces have been manipulated to give the world a collection that screams “Hey – we’re different; but we’re together”.

If you’re looking for some awesome inspiration for your party wear this summer, you now know where to look!

Roland Mouret Spring & Summer 2019

With impeccably styled models and a very light and breezy feel to the entire collection, once again, Roland Mouret makes the audience go “Wow” with the spring summer collection. While the designs have the cleanliness the brand is known for, the Roland Mouret Spring Summer 2019 girl is happy, bright and luxurious.

Interesting drapes used in subtle ways to enhance otherwise seemingly ordinary clothes off a rack, the line does justice to the expectations of the clients. While there are some pieces that do not go well in the perspective of cohesion, there is no doubt that they are all from the same brand.

From wide legged pants with sunglasses to pastel dresses with a little peek-a-boo detail on the shoulder, the collection presented has a happy-go-lucky feel to it. While this may not be the absolute best that Roland Mouret has had to offer, the fact that their clothes functioned well in an outdoor showcase where the strong wind of the evening could have made things go very wrong shows that patrons of the brand haven’t been wrong in placing their faith.

In essence, while all the looks of the collection are not for everyone, there is definitely something in the collection for everyone. One of the rare brands in whose collections individual pieces seem tacky but the overall look is appealing, you know where to look if you want a slightly classy, slightly eccentric look, this Summer!

Overall Impression – 7/10

Favourite Pieces – Pastel green one shoulder dress, Shiny silver shirt, little grey blue dress.

Malan Breton Spring & Summer 2019

One of the showcases that caught a lot of negative attention this season at the London Fashion Week was the Malan Breton showcase and we know why. While the collection was luxurious and used some phenomenally eye-catching material, the design element was where the brand lost all its points.

From Grecian to Victorian and old British designs, the collection failed to surprise or even satisfy the audience in a lot of ways. If the collection had to be summed up in a sentence, it would be “Prom girl meets business woman”.

Though a lot of individual pieces in the showcase were beautiful and aspirational – even, the entire show was a little over the top, when it comes down to it. With pieces that were in tacky yellow leather to some absolutely cringe worthy pieces, there was much disappointment in the people that left the venue that day.

However, that said, the brand did put forth some very strong style sensibilities and a distinct voice – even if that voice does not reverberate with a lot of people. For the ones willing to take some major (and we mean really major) risks in fashion this season, maybe you shouldn’t rule out this brand after all.

For the others, in the meantime, you can join us in praying that the next collection we see from Malan Breton is something that makes our eyebrows shoot skywards, for the right reasons.

Overall Impression – 6.5/10
