Ports1961 Spring & Summer 2019

With clothes that we could possibly imagine wearing to or having our guests wear to a brunch at our place, the Ports1961 collection for the upcoming season has some phenomenal clothes with great styling and accessories.

Of all the designers we saw, if we had to pick the one with the greatest range in terms of “design” – be it as drapes or silhouettes, cuts or even necklines, we would have to pick Ports1961. Ranging over lovely, knit one-shoulder seperates to completely formal, high waisted suits, Ports1961 offers to us a lot of commercial pieces with great design elements.

The only complaint that some of us had while watching the collection was that there seemed to be a tab bit too much of the fringe detailing in use – everywhere. The skirts, the tops, the dresses – well, even some accessories.

While each individual piece of the collection looked fabulous, there were some styling and accessorizing issues in the creation of the overall looks, especially where two or more statement prints were matched. That said, however, we did like the range of clothes – from outer wear to dresses and would have loved to see more of the collection long after the showcase was over.

In conclusion, there is little that we have to complain about, in the Ports 1961 collection this year. It is fashionably forward, has great design and even surprises us with the detailing on some of the clothes. If this sounds like something you would wear, it would make sure you don’t miss out on Ports1961 this season.

Overall Impression – 9/10

Favourite Pieces – blue dress with the interesting neckline, the coats, etc

Ashley Williams Spring & Summer 2019

If you’re looking for designs that make you squirm in your seat and make people uneasy, this season’s Ashley Williams Collection is just for you. With a range of colours (really.. range!) and prints in materials that border on “questionably cheap”, the beauty of a lot of the pieces is lost in the material used.

From newspaper prints to very bold animal prints, the collection uses myriad designs and styles for the presented looks – most of which either border on outdated or are just.. tacky. That said, there are some wonderful; salvageable pieces too – such as crop tops, netted skirts and even some swimwear with words. All of these can be recycled if styled will with things that actually accentuate them instead of making them look messy.

Coming to the styling, the accessories and the hair on the models was absolutely shocking – and not in a good way. Dazzling diamonds that remind us of all our fashion blunders back in 2005, not to mention hair styled enough to stick up in perfectly straight ponytails pointing to the roof – yes, an absolute recipe for disaster. Worse, words such as crazy in bedazzled hair accessories is the last thing we want to be seen wearing – with our lounge wear this summer.

All said and done, the one thing that cannot be taken away from the brand is how well it works with silhouettes and how good its construction is. While most of us would never dream of wearing over eighty percent of this collection, there is still a small part of our more adventurous souls who will rock those “Retired and loving it” clothes.

Overall Impression – 5.5/10

Favourite Pieces – Newspaper print dress, summer dresses, grey bell sleeved top

Gareth Pugh Spring & Summer 2019

If there is one collection that screams “Deadpool meets Rock Chick”, it is this!

This collection was by far our favourite one to watch – not for the pieces it showcased but for the entertainment value and the sheer fact that every piece that walked out, caught our attention and go “Oh!”

While these pieces may not be things you can wear on an everyday basis, these are definitely high fashion, new and highly editorial. For those looking for a rock chic, warrior princess look – there couldn’t be a better designer and/or collection to look at.

Though some might argue that the pieces were not the most sober, for people who celebrate eccentricity, these are a true treat. Most important element throughout the show has been the fluidity in the collection and how cohesive it has turned out to be.

It is going to take a while for us to get over this brilliant (albeit slightly impractical) collection – but needless to say, we are most certainly looking forward to their next showcase!

Overall Impression – 7/10

Favourite Pieces – Hot Pink full sleeve mini, Black bleached design dress.

Malan Breton Spring & Summer 2019

One of the showcases that caught a lot of negative attention this season at the London Fashion Week was the Malan Breton showcase and we know why. While the collection was luxurious and used some phenomenally eye-catching material, the design element was where the brand lost all its points.

From Grecian to Victorian and old British designs, the collection failed to surprise or even satisfy the audience in a lot of ways. If the collection had to be summed up in a sentence, it would be “Prom girl meets business woman”.

Though a lot of individual pieces in the showcase were beautiful and aspirational – even, the entire show was a little over the top, when it comes down to it. With pieces that were in tacky yellow leather to some absolutely cringe worthy pieces, there was much disappointment in the people that left the venue that day.

However, that said, the brand did put forth some very strong style sensibilities and a distinct voice – even if that voice does not reverberate with a lot of people. For the ones willing to take some major (and we mean really major) risks in fashion this season, maybe you shouldn’t rule out this brand after all.

For the others, in the meantime, you can join us in praying that the next collection we see from Malan Breton is something that makes our eyebrows shoot skywards, for the right reasons.

Overall Impression – 6.5/10

Favourite Pieces – Leather with Tulle Skirt and Coat

I Am Chen Spring & Summer 2019

Out of all the collections that did surprise us this year, I Am Chen was amidst the most talked about brands. Bright and subtle, the construction of the clothes was beautiful – as were the styling and accessories.

The collection showcased a good mix of patterns – a very risky move which could have gone wrong very easily. However, this collection marries prints beautifully and has managed to achieve an unexpected harmony among the individual pieces and the complete looks.

One of the chief highlights of the collection is the fact that it has something for everyone – we can see everyone from housewives to Hollywood stars owning and using these clothes. That, and of course that the point of view and the design perspective are very clearly demonstrated without being overpowering.

Though a lot of people were of the opinion that some of the styling was a little too 90s for their liking, the overall collection is very easy, summery, breezy and more than anything, a great blend of editorial as well as commercial collection. There was a constant element of “Wow” throughout the collection – so if you’re looking for all of the mentioned elements this summer, you know where to look!

Overall Impression – 7.5/10

Favourite Pieces – All the dresses – especially the knee-length ones

Anissa Aida Spring & Summer 2019

From what little we know of the world of fashion and showcases, there was so much more we all hoped we would be able to see from Anissa Aida this season. However, not only were most of us let down but also slightly disappointed beyond repair at the way things turned out.

While the collection had a good mix of bright and dull colours that can pass off as summer appropriate, there were a lot of things that could have been better. From styling to makeup as well as the patchworks that were messy and not stylish, there was a lot of complain about.

That said, however, the only saving grace we could find was that the construction and tailoring on the clothes looked decent enough to pass off as “designer”. Yet, since there was nothing special or unusual in the range, there is little for us to look forward to until the next season.

So if unless you’re looking for some very matronly fits and badly styled pieces that don’t have enough character to be statement and neither are they plain enough to be styled with something else, maybe Anissa Aida will have to show us a different collection to win our approval.

Overall Impression – 4/10

Favourite Pieces – The coat dress with some patchwork on the back

Erdem Spring & Summer 2019

Known for their classy pieces and sophisticated touch in their pieces, this time’s collection of Erdem was a little bit of a let-downer. Where there wasn’t anything fundamentally ‘wrong’ with it, it lacked the power and punch that usually puts a smile on our faces.

Though there still were power-suits and very British pieces, there was something surely amiss from this collection. Were they the veiled hats, or the (literal) ruffles and pink bows – that we cannot say for sure; but what we can us that it reminded us of ancient barbies trying to be modern women with no guidance whatsoever.

In defense of the brand, their fabrics and the materials used were beautiful and the prints, eclectic; but sadly, that’s more often than not, not enough to get the best reviews from critics.

The saddest part about the show was that there was nothing remarkable enough to write home about. Worse, in a sense, was that watching the show was like watching a time-lapse of period dramas with a lot of gory details left out.

With a lot of people admitting that the number of veiled faces used was unnecessary, everyone admitted that the inconsistency of the styling throughout the showcase did not work in the favour of the brand.

Basically, if you’re looking for a season that you need to work extra hard to tone down – and/or have a superhuman ability to tone even the flashiest of pieces down, Erdem is your brand for the season. If not, we’ll help you keep looking until they help us with a better collection!

Overall Impression – 4.5/10

Favourite Pieces – None; but we love the fabrics – not the designs.

JW Anderson Spring & Summer 2019

This year, the J W Anderson collection is for you if you like unusual but clean drapes in seemingly luxurious material. With unusual construct and some phenomenal individual pieces, we can’t deny there was something amiss from the collection.

Although the styling was uniform and there were some great commercially viable pieces, the collection failed to make us go “Wow – We need to get our hands on this!” Despite that, there were some lovely dresses and a very sensible use of blocks and panels in the designs.

In defense of the brand, they had some interesting footwear designs in the showcase, even though their models looked a little too matronly for the modern customer – no matter what age she might be. On the upside, they were able to capture and use some beautiful button designs to their benefit.

In all, the collection presented was nothing to write home about. Sure – as a brand, they have a lot of scope with those customers who like to be unique and unlike the others in their style. However, is this JW Anderson collection for everyone? Not really – and certainly not when at the end of the show, the audience is still wondering “Who is the J W Anderson girl?”

Overall Impression – 6/10

Favourite Pieces – only one or two memorable ones; personal choice of spectator

Victoria Bekham Spring & Summer 2019

Ten years after launching the brand, this year Victoria Bekham showcased her first ever runway collection and we couldn’t be more excited for it. The once pop-star turned designer may not have gone to fashion school – but she definitely grew to be one of the most famous British designers of the generation; and of course, not without good reason.

The collection presented was cohesive as well as diverse. Pairing lace with formal wear, bright hued clothes – her collection spoke of Summer and everything one can easily associate with it, without being too flashy about it. With styles that are both fun and summerlike to workwear that is sophisticated and smart, Bekham’s collection has nothing trashy. A couple of sensibly bold designs, some peek-a-boo panels in the clothes and a phenomenal use of materials in repeat have all made this collection something aspirational, yet attainable.

All said and done, it is hard to imagine one girl wearing all of those clothes. Yet, the collection surely has something for every member of a girl gang – so we may not have a “VB girl” but we can all be VB girls of some sort.

Overall Impression – 7/10

Favourite Pieces – White Lace Shirt with Formals; all the Black Pieces; Gowns

Burberry Spring & Summer 2019

With their new designer showcasing their personal first collection for Burberry this year, the Spring Summer Collection of the brand showcased at the London Fashion Week shows significant progress for the brand in terms of both – style and styling. Though there were some very “un-Burberry” like pieces in the collection, the contribution of the fresh perspectives in the company seems to fuse well with the legacy of the brand and thereby, deliver a cohesive collection, given the circumstances.

While all the beige pieces in the women’s collection were to die for, the hints of metallic shades were an unforeseen surprise that caught spectators off-guard. Polka dots and fringes seemed to earn a slight frown with the older audience who usually rely on Burberry for a more “Classique” approach to things.

That said, the collection had very good variety (albeit some are of the opinion that there were too many coats for a spring summer collection) but we would have liked to see more were their accessories. With some highly functional pieces for both men and women, the collection struck a great balance between casual and formal garments. However, in a lot of pieces, they were a hit or miss – they have no pieces that are in-betweeners.

In all, with checks and graphics, polka dots and camouflage, pastels and fringe, panels and stripes – not to mention the basics, Burberry this year has shown us that even a more traditional brand can sometimes have fun. The changes in the company and their collection thereby are bold new moves for the brand – and only time will tell if it will work in their favour.

Overall Impression – 7.5/10

Favourite Pieces – Beige Women Workwear; Horizontally buttoned Men’s blazer; the Burberry twist to the LBD; ALL the new bags
